Great Social Action Job Opportunity

The Unitarian Universalist Washington Office is seeking a Legislative Assistant for International Issues (with a focus on HIV/AIDS)

This position is part of the UUA Social Justice Internship Program, which combines service, learning, and faith development in order to equip young adults with the professional skills and strength of character to be lifelong leaders in Unitarian Universalism and working for social justice.

Legislative Assistants invest their time and energy in three main areas: Advocacy, Theological Reflection, and Community Service. The term is one year with potential for a one-year extension.

Term and Pay

This position would begin as soon as possible after April 1, 2006, and run through approximately July 2007. (If you are not available until May or June, please note that on your application.) The yearly salary will be at least $28,000 with benefits (including health insurance). Housing is not provided. Reimbursement is available for some moving expenses.

Qualifications

Applicants must be US citizens, Unitarian Universalists, and 18 years old by the start of the internship. Priority will be given to young adults, students and seminarians. Successful applicants will have good writing skills; passion for both advocacy and theological reflection; the ability to work independently; some experience with a UU congregation or organization; some experience with justice organizing or lobbying. In particular we are looking for candidates with academic, work, or volunteer experience related to the issues in the portfolio: international HIV/AIDS, with a particular emphasis on sex education, sex trafficking, and women's rights. Experience with India/Southeast Asia and international peace issues is a plus, but not required.
