UUCP_SAC 8-16-2006 meeting
The Unitarian Universalist Church of the Palouse Social Action Committee met Wednesday, August 16, 2006, in the UUCP meetinghouse basement at 6 p.m. for a potluck supper followed by a meeting at 7 p.m.
UUCP-SAC is planning a fall picnic with the local Muslim community. Watch for further developments in coming posts.
SAC discussed some ideas of ways to encourage walking or bicycling to Sunday services, including putting a bike rack outside the meetinghouse and starting some sort of rewards program, e.g., a free cookie after walking or bicycling 7 times. See the September UUCP newsletter and coming posts for further developments.
SAC decided to take up a collection for school supplies and/or cash contributions at the August 20 and 27 services. SAC will then take the donations to the
Community Action Partnership
for distribution to our low income and disadvantaged neighbors.
Some possible foci for the upcoming year for the Climate Change Group include the Green Cities initiative, the NW Earth Institute, and an adult class on Deep Ecology.
Walter Hesford from the Human Rights Task Force spoke to UUCP-SAC about our two groups coordinating efforts to oppose the "Defense of Marriage Proposition" through a public information campaign, such as via an informational booth at the Moscow Farmers Market on Saturday mornings.
On August 24, a state representative of Idaho Votes No will be in Moscow.
The Social Action Committee will be organizing a Sunday service on marriage equality issues on October 8. Dr. Elizabeth Brandt of the University of Idaho Law School will speak to UUCP on the Defense of Marriage issue.
The SAC will be organizing a work crew to do some fence painting at the Sojourner Alliance facility on September 23rd. Please contact peggy@jenkinsresearch.com if you would like to volunteer.
Highway cleanup is set for October 1.
SAC discussed plans to buy organic, free trade, shade grown coffee for the Sunday services coffee hour and other gatherings. See coming posts for further developments.
The SAC meeting decided that henceforth the regular SAC meeting day and time will be the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the UUCP meetinghouse basement, with an occasional pre-meeting potluck at 6 p.m. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, September 12.
