SAC news from Nov UUCP newsletter

In October the Social Action Committee worked on marriage equality, climate change and fighting hunger, and we plan to continue these efforts in the coming months.

Marriage equality. Professor Brandt gave a wonderful sermon on October 8th, and provided us all with points to use when talking to friends and neighbors about marriage equality. Have you used your talking points yet? One compelling argument Professor Brandt made was that the State of Idaho already recognizes many different relationships as "marriage": first marriages, fifth marriages, marriages with children and without; marriages between partners who live apart. Marriage has never been a one-sized-fits-all institution, and would not be harmed - and would in fact would be enriched -- by extending it to same sex couples. Professor Brandt also reminded us that a constitutional amendment stripping all non-traditional domestic partnerships of rights will harm many couples and families in many ways. Movie Premiere November 2d at 7 p.m. Another way our church is helping to raise awareness about gender discrimination is by helping to sponsor the Moscow Premiere of the film "Fall of 55" based on the book "The Boys of Boise", documenting the gay scandals in Boise in the 50s. The movie will be at the Kenoworthy, and the films director and an historian from Boise are will be present for the showing and will be part of a discussion after the movie. Learn more about the film at www.fallof55.com. Call Mary Jo Hamilton for more information.

Climate Change. Our climate change group is up and running again after a summer hiatus. The meetings are every other Monday at 5:30 (Next Meeting is October 30th) at One World Café. Check out Al Poplawsky's newletter article on the Sierra Club's "Cool Cities" initiative to see what the group is up to.

Hunger. Our weekly food collection is off to a slow but steady start. Do you have ideas for how we raise awareness in our congregation about hunger issues? Let's discuss them at our next meeting.
