2006 NOV 14 SAC meeting

The Social Action Committee met in the church basement on November 14, 2006, for a potluck at 6 p.m. and a meeting at 7 p.m.

HUNGER
One new idea discussed was working with university student groups on raising awareness and addressing needs relating to hunger in our community. Ellen Thiem reported that there are a number of campus groups focusing attention on the hunger issue, and they would love to involve our church and other community groups in their work. Speak to Ellen Thiem if you would like to get more involved.

Speaking of hunger, we are continuing to collect food for those in need in our area. Thanks to all those who have given and those who will continue to give, through the holidays and beyond.

CLIMATE CHANGE
The Social Action committee is also working with the Climate Change group to host a series of Adult RE sessions on climate change and sustainability issues. Our congregation is incredibly fortunate to have scientists and others who are knowledgeable and passionate about these issues, and we hope to have our resident experts lead several sessions in February and March, 2007 for those of us who would like to know more and do more. If you would like to get involved in planning, please contact Mary Jo Hamilton.

DR. JILL SEAMON
Another cause we’d like to promote in 2007 is the missionary work of Dr. Jill Seamon. Jill grew up in our church, as was recently heralded as a leading missionary in Time Magazine. Reverend Kayle will lead efforts to raise our community’s awareness of Jill and her selfless work in Sudan, and also to raise money to support her medical mission.

COMMUNITY WALK
Finally, late next spring, we’ll be participating in the CommUnity
Walk. Check out Jill Maxwell’s article for more details.

NEXT SAC MEETING
Our next meeting will be preceded by a potluck at 6 p.m.. with the meeting at 7 p.m., on December 7, 2006, in the Church Basement. Please come and get involved!
