UUCP-SAC 9-12-2006 meeting

The Unitarian Universalist Church of the Palouse Social Action Committee(UUCP-SAC) met in the UUCP Yellow House on Tuesday evening, 7-9 p.m., September 12, 2006. Peggy Jenkins chaired and Mary Jo Hamilton took minutes. Here is a condensation of the minutes:

Head Start

Liz Winn, Chair of Latah County Head Start, came to discuss volunteer opportunities with the organization. The school runs 3.5 hours/day, 4 days a week, and is open to students 3-4 years old. Three classes of 18 students run every day.

Many people from the community and the University volunteer at Head Start. Programs, in addition to the pre-school classes, include family support services, parent education, health and nutrition, mental health services, transportation, and community involvement. 80% of the funding comes from grants, and 20% comes from in-kind donations and community support. Volunteer time serves as in-kind matching at $10.79/hour. No Idaho state funds are received.

The facility of the Moscow, ID, Head Start program, a program of the Latah County Lewis-Clark Early Childhood Program, is in the basement of the Paradise Hills Church of God, 514 Northwood Drive, Moscow, ID.

There will be a meeting for those interested in becoming a volunteer at 10 AM on Monday, October 2 at the facility.

The organization also can use donations of books and toys. There is also an infant and children clothing exchange.

UUCP/Muslim Community Picnic

The picnic Sunday afternoon, September 10, 2006, at East City Park was a big success. There were about 120 people in attendance, fairly evenly split between the two communities.
UUCP supplied an excellent spread of food, and the Muslim community brought elegant desserts. Coffee, lemonade and water were available. The plates and flatware were on loan from the PCEI plate project. People sat and chatted for quite a while after the meal was over. Costs for the event were $42.00,which included cups for beverages, fee for use of picnic shelter, ice, bottled water, and a donation to PCEI. All agreed that we should make this an annual event.

Bike rack

We need a poster and collection box for this project. Peggy
Jenkins volunteered to make these items. Tina Hilding has written something for the newsletter.

Walk/bike to Church

We plan to have an incentive program where interested people will have a punch card which will be kept at the church and will be punched each time they walk or ride a bike to church [for Sunday service]. 10 punches gets them a coupon for a free cookie at the Co-op. Mary Jo Hamilton volunteered to make the cards and a poster. We agreed that the program would be announced on September 24.

Food Collection Basket

Ellen Thiem suggested that we have a food collection basket in the front of the church, where children could place nonperishable food items each week as they come forward for the children's story. The minister or celebrant could say something about remembering those in our community who are in need. The idea is to involve children in social action.

The food could be delivered on a rotating basis to various food banks in the community. Ellen will check with RE and Sunday services committees to get their input. Note: Ellen
brought this up at the next Sunday services committee meeting and received an enthusiastic response from the committee and the minister. She will write something up for the newsletter about it.

Giant Palouse Earthworm Sanctuary

Rod Sprague will write something on this project for the newsletter. He will also look into developing a native plant habitat and compost pile behind the church.

Climate Change Group

Peggy Jenkins talked with Al Poplawsky who is interested in pushing the Green Cities Initiative. Tina Hilding has expressed an interest in the Cool Cities program. Ellen Thiem checked the UUA website and found no curricula for a climate change study group, but there are quite a few books on the subject with study guides. Our goal is to get the group meeting again and see if we can come up with an adult RE program for the spring. Perhaps we could do something on the UUA statement of conscience regarding climate change.

Next Social Action Committee meeting

will be on Tuesday, October 10 at 7 PM

Action opportunities

Sojourners Alliance work party to stain a fence. We agreed to form a work party on Saturday afternoon, September 23, at 1 PM. They will supply the stain; we need to bring brushes. Contact Pat Scott for more information.

Highway cleanup: the fall cleanup is scheduled for Sunday, October 1 after church. Contact Margaret Dibble for more information.

The Peace Coalition is sponsoring an "Eyes Wide Open" demonstration on September 26-27 to commemorate all of the reserves who have died in Iraq. Volunteers are needed to help with the display; contact Jill Maxwell for more information.

Habitat for Humanity is getting ready to build a house on the corner of Paradise and Ridge Road in Moscow. For more information, or to volunteer, call 208-883-8502 or e mail habitat@moscow.com with your name and contact information, along with any special skills you have.

The National ACLU LGBT Rights Project and the National Center for Lesbian Rights will be in Moscow Monday, September 25, 7 PM, at the SUB Ballroom to talk about the proposed [Idaho] constitutional Amendment that will be on the ballot on November 7. For more information, contact Ellie Merrick or Morgen Reynolds.

The U of I Homecoming Parade will be on October 7. Come and join the Idaho Votes No group in the parade and show your opposition to HJR2, the Defense of Marriage amendment to the constitution that will be on the ballot in Idaho on November 7. Wear your UUCP T shirt! For more information, contact Joann Muneta.

The Idaho Votes No campaign will have a local steering committee meeting to coordinate our efforts to defeat HJR2 on Thursday, September. 21 at 5:30 in the backroom of Mikey's Restaurant. For more information, contact Walter Hesford.

Our campaign to keep a Super WalMart from being built in our community is not yet over. We need letters to the Latah County Commissioners urging them to apply Moscow's Large Retail Establishment ordinance in the Area of City Impact in the county. This would assure that any developer would have to follow a public process to obtain a Conditional Use Permit before they were allowed to build in the area. Currently, there are no provisions for public notice or any checks on the system. For more information, contact Mary Jo Hamilton.

Joint UUCP-Muslim Potluck Picnic Sunday

The Social Action committee would like to invite the whole Unitarian Universalist Church of the Palouse congregation
to a joint UUCP/Muslim Community potluck picnic on Sunday, September 10th (that's next Sunday!) at the picnic shelter in East City Park.

The Muslim community will be bringing dessert; we will provide the rest of the food. Please bring a large dish to share. No pork or gelatin dishes,or salad dressings containing wine. The Social Action committee will provide dishes, silverware and beverages.

The Muslim community hosted us for a meal a couple of years ago - let's show them some UUCP hospitality.

If the weather is bad, the meal will be held at the church.
For more information, contact Jill Maxwell or Mary Jo Hamilton.
