Islam Community and Faith

Community event:
A "Community Conversation: Islam-Community and Faith" will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2007, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., at the Moscow High School Auditorium, 402 East 5th Street, Moscow, Idaho. Two speakers, Dr. S.M Ghazanfar and Chaplain James Yee, will speak on Islam as a civilization and a faith respectively. There will be a panel discussion and refreshments. Free to the public.

Chaplain Yee is a former Muslim Chaplain for the U.S. prison camp in Guantanamo Bay. After being officially recognized twice for outstanding performance, Chaplain Yee was arrested and imprisoned
in a Navy brig for 76 days in September 2003 while being falsely accused of spying, espionage and aiding the alleged Taliban and Al-Qaeda prisoners. After months of government investigation, all criminal charges were dropped. For more information, see:

The Heat Is On: Community Discussions on Climate Change

March 22 Making a Difference: We Can Do More.

Thursday, March 22, 2007, 7:30 p.m., at the 1912 Center in Moscow, Idaho, corner of 3rd Street and Van Buren Street.

Panelists and participants will look at activities of the City of Moscow and other communities and next steps. Speakers:

Scott Fedale: Chairman of the Moscow Health and Environment Commission. He will speak to ongoing efforts of the City of Moscow to reduce energy usage/global warming emissions and also future plans in this area.

Michael Jennings of The Nature Conservancy will speak on legislative efforts of U.S. states to reduce global warming emissions and carbon trading.

Al Poplawsky, Chairman of the Palouse Group of the Sierra Club will speak on the Sierra Club Cool Cities Program to assist US cities in signing and meeting the "U.S Mayors Climate Protection Agreement."

Gary Macfarlane of Friends of the Clearwater will talk about the
Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act. An act to be reintroduced into Congress again this year which proposes protecting large tracts of Northern Rockies roadless lands and corridors between them.

Nils Peterson, local activist will talk about how the City of Moscow Comprehensive Plan Revision might relate to development patterns, transportation options, and thus global warming emissions.

The event is supported by the Social Action Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Palouse, the Palouse Group of The Sierra Club, and the Moscow High School Environmental Club.

This will be the fifth and last of five sessions.

4th Anniversary of Iraq War rally, march

On Saturday, March 17, 2007, at 1:00 p.m., the Palouse Peace Coalition will lead a rally and parade starting at Friendship Square, Main Street at 4th Street, in Moscow, Idaho, to mark the fourth anniversary of the U. S. invasion and occupation of Iraq, which President Bush ordered on March 19, 2003.

Jane Goodall speaks at WSU

Community event:
Famed primatologist Jane Goodall will discuss the highlights of more than 45 years of research on the family and social life of chimpanzees in Tanzania as the featured speaker for the annual Lane Family Lecture in Environmental Sciences on March 8, 2007, in Beasley Coliseum, Washington State University, Pullman, Washington. Doors open at 6 p.m. Goodall's address, "Reason for Hope," will begin at 7:30 p.m. Free Admission (tickets not required).

KRFP Cajun Dinner at UUCP

On Saturday, March 3, 2007, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist church building, 420 E. 2nd Street at Van Buren Street, Moscow, Idaho, radio station KRFP 92.5 FM Radio Free Moscow is having a fundraiser that includes a Cajun style dinner, dance music by Snake River Six, and entertainment by Fiddlin' Big Al and Silent Auction.

$20 for dinner and two drinks -- beer, wine, or soft drink.

$5 for dancing only

Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m.; Music starts at 7:00 p.m.

Making a Difference: What Can We Do Now?

Thursday, March 1, 2007, 7:30 to 9 p.m., at 1912 Center at Van Buren and Third Streets, Moscow, Idaho.

Panelists will include community leaders and representatives from City of Moscow, Sierra Club, area businesses, public utilities, and the University of Idaho, addressing current efforts.

This is the fourth of five public meetings on global warming and climate change.

Coming up: The fifth and last meeting, Making a Difference: We Can Do More, has been rescheduled from March 8 to March 22.

The event is supported by the Social Action Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Palouse, the Palouse Group of The Sierra Club, and the Moscow High School Environmental Club.
