Dr. Jill Seaman Dinner and Talk
In the evening of Sunday, April 29, the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Palouse Social Action Committee will host Dr. Jill Seaman. At 6:00 p.m. bring family and friends to a "feed of dreams" fundraiser dinner in the church basement. A variety of all-you-can-eat, home-made soups and salads will be served. The charge will be $5 per person or $15 per family. The money raised will be given to assist Dr. Seaman's work. At 7:00 p.m. Dr. Seaman will give a Power-Point presentation about her TB Project in Sudan. See: http://www.boschnet.net/sudan/index.htm. Jill grew up here in Moscow, Idaho, the daughter of a University of Idaho philosophy professor, and she was in our UUCP congregation.
Moscow CommUNITY Walk
Community event: Moscow CommUNITY Walk "Walking on Common Ground" Saturday, April 28 everyone is invited to gather at Friendship Square. Community members will deliver thoughts on community and walking on common ground. At 1:00 the walk will proceed from Friendship Square to East City Park, accompanied by music. Walkers will be greeted at East City Park with music, games, beverages, activities for kids, and a potluck supper. The event will likely end around 4:00 pm. Questions? Want to lend your support? Sister City presentation
Community event: On Thursday, April 26, 2007, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m., at the 1912 Center, located at 3rd Street and Van Buren Street in Moscow, Idaho, the Moscow Sister City organization will sponsor a presentation by Dave Barber about his recent visit to Moscow's sister city, Villa El Carmen, Nicaragua.
Disability Awareness Concert
Community event: Thursday, April 26, 2007, from 7 to 9 p.m. (preceded by a reception from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Atrium) there will be a folk music Disability Awareness Concert in room 203 of the CUE building on the Washington State University campus in Pullman, Washington.
Euthanasia Discussion
Community event: Thursday, April 26, 2007, from noon to 1 p.m., in K House next to the Bookie, on the campus of Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, Stephen Drake of Not Dead Yet and a panel of people with disabilities will discuss euthanasia.
Euthanasia Debate
Community event: Wednesday, April 25, 2007, from 7 to 9 p.m. (preceeded from 6 to 7 p.m. by a free food reception in the atrium) in room 202 of the CUE Building at Washington State University campus in Pullman, Washington, Dan Holbrook of the WSU philosophy faculty and Stephen Drake, co-founder of Not Dead Yet, will debate about euthanasia.
Pizza Bottoms
On Saturday, April 21, 2007, at 8:00 a.m. there will be a Pizza Bottom Making party at the Junior High School in the cafeteria to help prepare for the UUCP-SAC booth on May 5 and 6 at the Renaissance Fair.
Deliver Darfur Rally
community event: On April 20, 2007, at 7:00 p.m., at the Gladish Community Center, there will be a Deliver Darfur Community Rally to help stop the genocide in Darfur. Choir groups will be performing from 7-8:00 p.m. A panel discussion with local experts will be held at 8:00 p.m. The Gladish Community Center is located at 115 NW State Street in Pullman, Washington.
Ayame Village Bicycle Project
On Sunday, April 15, 2007, at 7 p.m., the PPQ (Purple Paisley Quilters) is sponsoring a showing of the acclaimed documentary "Ayamye", filmed in Ghana, about the Village Bicycle Project. Based in Moscow, this organization refurbishes bikes and ships them to Ghana for new lives as transportation for Ghanians. Dave Peckham, founder of Village Bicycle Project, will introduce the film. The evening will open with a concert of the Sesitshaya Marimba Band. Two shorter films will also be shown; "Ghana Women's Bicycle Initiative", filmed in Ghana, and "Village Bicycle Project: New Life for Old Bikes", filmed here in Moscow. Admission is via a suggested donation of $5. We will have many wonderful door prizes. Additional door prize tickets may be purchased for $1 each. You may select which door prize you want to win by placing your ticket in the designated jar. Come and celebrate this unique and successful program here in Moscow, have a great evening and perhaps win a wonderful door prize. Step It Up to Action on Global Warming
Moscow residents concerned about the catastrophic effects of global warming will hold a rally on April 14, 2007 to urge Congress to put America on the path towards reducing carbon emissions 80% by 2050. The event is part of the Step it Up Campaign, the largest day of citizen action focusing on global warming in our nation's history. The Step It Up Moscow event will begin with a group bike ride starting at East City Park, proceeding through downtown Moscow, and ending at the 1912 Building Plaza where participants in the event will be photographed displaying their message: "Step It Up Congress! Cut Carbon 80% by 2050!" This photograph will be sent to Washington, DC along with photos from over 976 other events happening in all 50 states so members of congress can see for themselves that their constituents are demanding bold action. The Step It Up Moscow event is one of the Palouse Earth Day Association 2007 Earth Month events. WHERE: The bike parade will begin at the east (Hayes Street) side of East City Park. The rally and photograph will be at the Plaza of the 1912 Building. If you can't make the bike ride, please join us at the 1912 Building for the photographed message. SAC April meeting minutes
Minutes of the Wednesday, April 11, 2007, SAC meeting at 7 p.m. in the UUCP Yellow House Present: Sid Eder, Tom Henderson, Peggy Jenkins, Kayle Rice, Rod Sprague, Louise Ashmun, Mary Jo Hamilton, Brian Leekley, Jill Maxwell. 1. Report on Hunger issues: A copy of the Hunger Alliance report is attached to these minutes. 2. Planning for Jill Seaman's service and possible fundraising event April 29: Jill is planning to do a power point presentation on Sunday, April 29 in the sanctuary. We will sponsor a soup and bread dinner before the presentation as a fundraiser for her Sudan project. Prices $5 each, $15/family. Dinner 6 PM, presentation 7 PM. Tom Henderson will make a poster. Peggy will get a list together for publicity. Peggy will also find a power point projector. Kayle will look into child care providers. Mary Jo will send out an e mail to the church asking for volunteer cooks. 3. Fundraiser for Village Bicycle Project April 15. Everything is going well. Sesitshaya Marimba band will play to open. We have lots of donated door prizes. OWC [One World Cafe] will sponsor a post-function and donate half of their profits. Tendai will play at OWC. 4. Report on plans for CommUnity Walk April 28: They have a very ambitious program. We decided that we could take on selling T shirts. Jill will contact them and volunteer us. 5. Planning for Step It Up April 14 (Louise Ashmun): Event starts with a bike ride from East City Park through downtown, ending at the 1912 Building at 9:30. Joe Pallen will take the main photo; he will use Joel Hamilton's fancy camera. Louise will be at the park at 9 AM; Mary Jo will be at the 1912 Building to get the ladder out - Joe will take the photo from the ladder. 6. Planning for Renaissance Fair (Mary Jo): We have our booth reserved. Fair meeting is April 20. Menu same as last year. Peggy volunteered to make up a sign up poster. We brainstormed a list of potential beneficiaries of our profit, and settled on four: Backyard Harvest through PCEI; Darfur via UUSC; Alternatives to Violence on the Palouse, and Planned Parenthood International. 7. Planning for Mother's Day Peace Rally May 12: Rebecca Rod is generally in charge of this; we will send out an e mail via the church asking for volunteers to contact Rebecca directly. Good chance of collaboration with the PPC. 8. Iran film festival in the fall - do we want to participate? Sid Eder presented his ideas. He would like to show one or more films in the fall. Cost will probably be $500 - $700 per film. He will contact us when plans are firmed up. Brian will be the point person from SAC. 9. Joann Muneta asked via e mail if the local Scouts were being involved in the CommUnity walk. Kayle agreed to put her in touch with the people who run the GS group that meets in our church, and also with Marguerite Thoreson. She also asked if we could contribute any money towards bringing a Japanese Internment Camp survivor to speak at the high school. Unfortunately, we have no budget.
