Social Action Committee meeting

The next meeting of the UUCP Social Action Committee will be on Tuesday, November 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Yellow House basement.

We’ll talk about Christmas for kids, and plans to expand our role in helping meet the needs those in the Palouse who are hungry and food insecure.

SAC will participate in the Committee Fair

On Sunday, September 28, UUCP will host a Committee Fair in the church basement between services. This is an opportunity for all committees to showcase their wonderful works and to talk to potential volunteers.

Tables will be set up for your use. Bring materials (your committee description) and people to show what you do to support the good works and ministry of this church.

PPQ Feed of Dreams

The Purple Paisley Quilters (PPQ) will present the first Feed of Dreams of the fall on Wednesday, September 17 at 6:00 p.m. in the church basement.

$3 per person ; $10 per family

They will be presenting the highly acclaimed Locavore End-of-the-garden cuisine that can be done only on the Palouse. Look for Eggplant Parmesan, Potato-leek soup, exotic zucchini dishes, lots of homegrown tomatoes. As a special treat, we will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of Ferdinand’s dairy at WSU with Ferdinand’s ice cream.

Profits from this gourmet eat-a-thon will go to support the PPQ’s planned renovation and general tidying-up of the room in the basement outside the bathroom and furnace room. This event will also give everyone a chance to purchase raffle tickets for the PPQ’s current raffle quilt, a Dresden Plate pattern with a vintage quilt top and lots of hand quilting. What a win-win event!

UUCP - Muslim Community Annual Picnic

The annual Muslim-UUCP picnic this year will be held in Klemgard County Park ten miles north of Pullman Washington at 1:30 PM on Sunday, August 24, 2008. The Muslim community is hosting, and UUCP are providing desserts. More information and a map link will be posted later.

Palouse Pride

Palouse Pride, the annual gay pride and pro-diversity march and festival, this year will be Saturday, August 2, 2008.

11:00 a.m. staging for the march begins in Friendship Square on Main Street in downtown Moscow, Idaho

11:30 a.m. the march begins, from Friendship Square to East City Park, which is a few blocks east of downtown on 3rd Street

12:00 Noon - 4:00 p.m. Diversity Festival in East City Park, with vendors, information booths, entertainment, raffles, and children's entertainment

6:00 p.m. Spaghetti Feed at the Pullman, Washington, Moose Lodge, corner of Paradise and Kamiaken

9:00 p.m. Doors open at Pullman Moose Lodge for TabiKat Drag Show. $5 in advance at Eclectica, $7 at the door. Shows at 10:30 p.m. and midnight

Food Collection for Food Banks at Farmers Market

Idaho Move Out

Idaho Move Out is an annual program to collect unwanted goods and nonperishable foods from moving away University of Idaho at Moscow students and to distribute or recycle them. The collection will go on May 7 through May 11, 2008. UUCP Social Action Committee is helping. For info contact Ellen Thiem.

UUCP Booth at Renaissance Fair

The Social Action Committee will coordinate the UUCP Booth at Renaissance Fair on May 3 and 4. Last year's Ren Faire fundraising raised $2000 (after expenses) selling the food items people have come to expect: our UUCP's famous black bean burritos, homemade tomato and basil pizzas baked on site, a delectable chocolate cake known as "Jeanne Jacobson’s Scotch Cake", a pound cake, brownies, and organic, shade–grown hot coffee.

We need volunteers to assist with tasks, including desert baking, coffee making, help with recycling, and working a shift on the days of the faire. Look for the sign-up sheet in the church foyer or contact Mary Jo Hamilton or Ellen Thiem.

Hunger Ministry meeting

Moscow CommUnity Walk

Community event:

On Saturday, April 26, walkers (any and all Moscow, ID residents and visitors who want to participate) will gather at 12:00 noon at Friendship Square for music and speakers.

At 12:30pm, the walk will proceed to East City Park with balloons, banners, and flags.

The celebration will continue at East City Park with more music, speakers, games, activities, and student essay awards.

At about 1:30pm everyone is invited to join in a community meal. The main dish will be provided, but those who wish to contribute can bring a side dish or desert to the park at noon.

A shuttle will be available to transport people between the Park and Friendship Square.

The event will likely end at 4:00pm.

Those who want to contribute food side dishes can bring them to East City Park between 11:30am and 12:30pm.

The Disability Awareness Association of Washington State University is sponsoring Euthanasia: A Disability Perspective with a panel of disability experts who have disabilities themselves. The proposed Death with Dignity initiative in Washington state will be addressed.

Aswea: A Haitian Soiree

Friday, April 18 from 6:30pm to 9:00pm at the Unitarian Church of the Palouse, Haitian food, music, a slide show, skits, and a silent auction will be enjoyed by all. This is a great chance to learn firsthand about life in Haiti!

Admission is $5 and tickets are available at BookPeople or at the door. The event is being sponsored by the Social Action Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Palouse, the Latah County Human Rights Task Force, and the Moscow High School Human Rights Club and International Club. Funds raised will go for travel expenses and human rights activities in Haiti.

Have you met Afelene Rosemond, teacher and human rights activist who is visiting Moscow from Haiti? She is from the rural community of Matenwa on the island of LaGonave off Haiti's coast. She arrived in Moscow January 8 and will stay until May 8. In Haiti, Afelene teaches preschool and is a member of a women’s group which uses popular theater to promote social change, especially surrounding issues of women’s and children’s rights.

While in Moscow, Afelene is learning English and has performed in a play at Lewis–Clark State College, and at the University of Idaho Women’s Center, and she is visiting preschool classes and dance classes for young children. Her goal is to be able to help members of her community interact better with people from the US who offer them assistance.

Her visit is being sponsored by Nancy Casey, who travels to Matenwa for several months every year. Also assisting the visit are Moscow High School teacher Leeanne Eareckson and her daughter Anne Gorman, who visited Matenwa last July, and Annie Cantrell, who is housing Afelene.

At the Aswea, food will include rice and beans and dessert. There will be songs by Afelene, informational posters about food issues in Haiti and particularly on LaGonav, and the program will include a short skit about those issues. The slide show will be about everyday life on LaGonav including the daily challenge of finding enough food to eat. The goal is for people to leave with a better understanding of Haitian life and thinking about possibilities of future exchange programs.

UUCP Highway Clean-Up

Highway clean-up will be Sunday, April 13. Meet at the Church at 1:00pm, after the Surprise Pals Potluck, and we will carpool to the site.

This will be the first clean-up on our new section of highway, so let’s have a good turnout. The more people we have the faster it will go!

Although the sign says "Unitarian Universalist Youth Group", this is multi–age activity, and SAC always helps. Youth junior high age and above may come without a parent, but we need drivers.

Younger children must be accompanied by a parent or designated adult. Please bring water and snacks to share, and gloves if you have them. We have the ever–fashionable orange vests and garbage sacks.

Pizza Bottoms

On the morning of April 12, UUCPers will gather at the Moscow Junior High School Cafeteria from 8:00am to 11:00am to make "pizza bottoms" for the Renaissance Faire Pizza booth. 3 More Cups of Tea fundraiser

Tea and cookies will be served at a fundraiser at the 1912 Building at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday April 5, 2008, to raise money for building schools in Pakistan, as described in the book Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.

This event is being sponsored by a coalition of local church groups, including UUCP Purple Paisley Quilters.
