UUCP members and friends may visit and use the church library from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon Monday through Friday. Please see Summer Stevens, UUCP Secretary, in the church office for access.

The church library may also be visited and used when the Yellow House is open Wednesdays and Thursdays 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Fridays noon to 3:00 p.m., during the office hours of Director of Religious Education Janet Guthrie-Granja. Her office is on the second floor of the Yellow House.

What is the checkout procedure? For how long may a book be checked out?

Once you find the book you want, simply fill out a check-out slip with your name, your telephone number or email address, and the book’s or books’ title(s) and author(s), and then drop the slip in the check-out lock box.

Books and other items may be checked out for one month. If no one has asked for it, the item may be checked out again for another month as above or by emailing .

How is the library organized?

Books are shelved by broad subject categories, color coded. Within each category, the books are shelved in random order. The library is small, so it is easy to eyeball a category on a shelf to see what books are on hand.

These are the shelf categories:

  • World Religions (red)
    (I. General; II. Christianity; III. Islam; IV. Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Hinduism; V. Judaism; VI. Egyptian and other Earth-based);
  • Unitarian Universalism (blue);
  • Philosophy / Theology / Ethics (green);
  • Religious Education (light green);
  • Leadership (also light green);
  • Inspiration / Meditation / Poetry (yellow);
  • Self-Help (light blue);
  • Parenting (pink);
  • Culture & Politics (orange);
  • Biography / Autobiography (brown);
  • History (gray);
  • Reference (purple);
  • Drama (white); and
  • Death & Grief (dark purple); and
  • Local (no color).

Children's books, on their own shelves, are in these shelf categories:

  • Picture Books ~ picture-based, usually under 33 pages, usually read to young children (blue and white with a P);
  • Early Readers ~ shorter books with relatively easy words for beginning readers to try to read by themselves with help (blue and yellow with an E);
  • Middle Readers ~ longer books, sometimes Chapter books, with more difficult words (blue and pink with a M);
  • Advanced Readers ~ longer books, including novels, for preteen to early teen readers (green with an A);
  • Myths, Legends, Creation Stories, Folk Tales ~ (lavender);
