Social Action
Have a social action announcement? If you know of a local social action event or project that you would
like to include on our social action calendar, please contact us at:
SAC Blog: Social Action NewsClick here to see, at the UUCP-SAC blog, announcements and descriptions of upcoming Social Action Committee activities and events. Also see the archived postings on the SAC blog to learn more about the Social Action Committee's history. Projects throughout the year(Besides sponsoring various events and projects as a committee, SAC participants share with one another information about local community social action events of probable individual interest, as opportunities to live, express, and uphold Unitarian Universalist principles.) February FundraiserEach February we host a fundraiser for a local community group. PCEI Stream Clean-UpVolunteers from the UUCP participate in the PCEI Annual Paradise Creek Stream Clean-up each spring. UUCP volunteers join the PCEI staff and others in the community to plant trees and clean up sections of Paradise Creek. Renaissance Fair Pizza BoothEvery year at Moscow's Renaissance Fair the UUCP sponsors a UUCPizza booth, We sell assorted pizzas, black bean burritos, delicious desserts, and the best coffee at the Fair. All profits are given away to charities. Past beneficiaries include Planned Parenthood International, local food banks, Nez Perce Tribe, PCEI, Latah Trail and Alternatives to Violence on the Palouse. Highway Clean-upWe participate in the Highway clean-up program. We have a two mile stretch of State Hwy 95 just this side of Potlatch; look for the signs next time you drive that way. The sign says Unitarian Universalist Youth Group, but we know that it really means young at heart and that anyone can help with the clean up. Christmas for KidsEach year, UUCP "adopts" 10 to 12 needy kids in Latah County. We provide presents of clothing and toys to brighten their holiday season. Trees decorated with gift tags appear in the church foyer around Thanksgiving. Each tag describes a present. People take the tags, buy the gifts, and return them, brightly wrapped, under the tree. Around Dec. 10 to 15 the gifts are sorted and delivered to the Christmas for Kids headquarters. In addition (or instead of) buying gifts, people are needed to make tags and put them on the tree, sort gifts, and deliver them. Afghans for Afghans
L-R: Cindy Magnuson, Marguerite Thoreson, Mike O'Neil, Vanessa, Betsy
Thomas, Tom Casad, Margaret Dibble, Mary George, Louise Ashmun.
Coordinated by the Purple Paisley
Quilters, our church participates in Afghans for Afghans, an
international organization that provides blankets, hats, mittens,
socks and other hand knitted garments to children and adults in
Afghanistan. You can learn more about this group by visiting their website. Have you noticed
the basket of knitting sitting in the foyer of the church? The
strips-in-progress in the basket will be sewn together and finished
into afghans. Just pick up a strip and knit on it while you attend a
service or committee meeting, and then leave it back in the basket.
Any other new hand knit garments (not scarves, please), especially
wool or wool blends, can be given to the PPQ, and they will see that
they get included in the next shipment. For more information, contact
